What Does
Career Counseling Involve?
1) Assessment This involves a process of objectively
evaluating your skills, interests and values to determine an appropriate
career or career position. It may include a series of vocational and
personality instruments, such as the Strong Interest Inventory, the
FIRO-B, or the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, among
others.
Assessment may also involve
the identification of barriers to effective employment, such as poor
decision-making abilities or self-defeating attitudes and
behaviors
2) Research It is important to learn how to find and use
career information so that you can effectively research companies,
organizations and industries of interest. I offer help in determining
areas to research, as well as how to conduct productive face-to-face
informational interviews.
3) Career
Management This may include a variety of interpersonal goals,
such as creating greater visibility within an organization, advancing
within a company, getting along with others at work, or dealing with
office politics. Together, we develop strategies to accomplish your
goals.
4) Self-Marketing This area includes developing a career
network, creating an outstanding resume, sharpening interviewing skills,
and negotiating a salary, benefits and severance
package.
5) Action
Plan What is my next step? Do I need further training? Do I need
a job change or a career change?
